How to Actually Remember Organic Reaction Mechanisms

Most students try to memorise organic mechanisms the same way they memorise vocabulary — by staring at a diagram until it feels familiar. It rarely survives exam pressure.

Instead, treat every mechanism as a short story with a beginning, a conflict and a resolution: which species is electron-rich, which is electron-poor, and what breaks or forms as a result.

Redraw each mechanism from a blank page three times across a week, spaced a day apart, rather than once in a single long session. Spacing beats repetition.

Finally, pair every mechanism with one past-paper question that tests it. Recognition without application is the most common gap between coursework grades and exam grades.
